Artist's Description

Dahlia flowers have a long and fascinating history that spans continents and cultures. They are native to the high plains of Mexico and Central America, where they were cultivated by the Aztecs for their edible tubers, medicinal properties, and ornamental value. The Aztecs also called them The War Flower based on a myth surrounding the plant.

The dahlia was first introduced to Europe from Spain in 1798 by a botanist named Abbe Cavanille, who named it after a Swedish scientist, Andreas Dahlia. Since then, many different varieties of dahlias have been developed by crossing different species and selecting for different flower shapes, sizes, and colors. Some of the types of dahlias include single, double, pompon, cactus, waterlily, peony-flowered, and collerette.

Dahlias are popular ornamental plants that bloom from late summer to autumn. They come in a wide range of colors, except for blue. They are also the national flower of Mexico and the official flower of Seattle and Sa...
